What Are the Solutions to Resident Doctors’ Financial Struggles?

In recent years, resident doctors have begun raising concerns: they complain about the low remuneration (essentially a stipend) they receive while working as part of the required medical training, which comes after nearly a decade of education. The amount is 135,000 tenge.

Residents say it is impossible to live on that amount. As a result, many are forced to take on evening jobs: some work as practising doctors, while others take roles as couriers or taxi drivers. They argue that this additional workload undermines the quality of their training and future performance as doctors.

Medical professionals and the residents themselves suggest increasing the stipend based on the year of study. They also believe that tripartite agreements between the state, universities, and private clinics could help improve the situation.
