Being There When Memory Fades

Today, more than 57 million elderly people worldwide are living with dementia. According to WHO estimates, this number will continue to rise, along with the global economic costs, which reached 1.3 trillion US dollars in 2019. Nearly half of this amount is spent on home-based (informal) care, which is most often provided by family members.

Kazakhstan is no exception. Life expectancy is increasing, the population is aging — and age is one of the main risk factors for developing dementia.

People with dementia and their family members are often left to face the disease alone — without clear guidance, without psychological support, and without knowing where to turn for help. Yet important initiatives to support such families are already underway in Kazakhstan.
