Greening the Seabed — Could This Be the Solution?

One of the most pressing environmental issues of global concern remains the shrinking of the Aral Sea. Even today, salty dust rising from the exposed seabed spreads over 1.5 million square kilometers each year, posing a direct threat to human health. The region, officially recognized as an environmental disaster zone, requires not only financial support — such as wage supplements — but also a systematic and sustainable approach to addressing the problem. One such approach is the project to green the dried-up seabed of the Aral Sea. What began decades ago has evolved into a large-scale joint effort between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The planting of saxaul and other drought-resistant plants is aimed at combating desertification and preventing salt storms. This scientifically grounded project is seen as a source of hope for restoring ecological balance.
