Barriers to Building a Water-Saving Culture

Do we forget that water is not limitless? We treat every drop flowing from the tap as if it were infinite, allowing ourselves to waste it. The reality, however, is that Kazakhstan is among the countries with the highest levels of water consumption — and in the future, this could directly threaten national security.

President Tokayev has openly warned that by 2050 our country could face “an acute water shortage.” There are many reasons for this: worn-out pipelines, outdated infrastructure, untreated wastewater. But perhaps the most critical is the absence of a public culture of water conservation.

The article examines the root causes of the problem: why people fail to save water, what initiatives are being implemented to address the issue, and why Kazakhstan is lagging behind international best practices. It also features opinions and suggestions from Almaty residents, concrete proposals from students and environmentalists, as well as a new system of fines and recent changes in water policy.
