Residents of the Mangystau region may face a water shortage: the Caspian Sea is in a critical state. Scientists warn that without urgent action, the Kazakhstan part of the sea could turn into desert by the end of the 21st century. If this giant lake at the junction of five countries keeps getting shallower, the result will be a serious ecological catastrophe that threatens not only the environment but also the region's economy. The falling sea level affects unique ecosystems and migratory birds, as well as the Caspian seal, which raises its young on ice floes in the northern part of the sea. The drying of the shallowest part of the basin first of all threatens the seal population with extinction. Between 24 October and 18 November 2024 alone, 1,155 dead seals were found on the Caspian coast in the Tupkaragan area of the Mangystau region. If nothing is done, the sea and all life in it may disappear. What can be done to prevent this?
