According to a UN Development Programme report, by 2040 Kazakhstan may face a severe water shortage, with national water resources meeting only 50% of total demand. Farmers in the southern regions are already beginning to experience a lack of irrigation water. Meanwhile, agricultural producers in the Zhambyl and Ile districts of Almaty Region have long been grappling with this issue. One way to address the water scarcity problem is to use water from Lake Sorbulak — which is formed through a multi-stage treatment of wastewater — for irrigating farmland.
