This article examines the volume of municipal solid waste in Astana and the pressing challenges facing the city’s waste management infrastructure. Low levels of sorting and recycling, along with overfilled landfills, pose a significant environmental threat. Drawing on international experience, the piece outlines specific solutions: making waste sorting legally mandatory, introducing environmental education from the school level, building recycling plants, and generating energy and hydrogen from waste. It highlights initiatives already implemented in Japan, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Germany as models to follow. For Kazakhstan, developing a comprehensive ecosystem and an effective waste management model is a matter of urgency.
