Over 90% of the shoes worn by people in Kazakhstan are imported. Most come from China, Uzbekistan, Russia, and Turkey. While the country does have a few footwear factories, most of them focus on fulfilling state orders — producing shoes for the military or specific sectors. Locally made products for everyday consumers are rare. As a result, the domestic footwear industry remains underdeveloped, and billions of tenge flow abroad each year.
