Every year, the upkeep of large administrative buildings in Astana costs the budget hundreds of millions of tenge. Yet these well-known buildings stand idle most of the time and are closed to ordinary citizens. Almaty has a different problem: many abandoned buildings owned by state or quasi-state companies have simply been forgotten. None of them bring any financial or social benefit, although they could become places that draw city residents.
Project resident Aigerim Fazyl looked into the losses these vacant square metres may cost the budget and whether a useful purpose can be found for them.
