Why does the city of Atbasar in the Akmola Region face devastating floods every spring, causing multimillion-tenge losses and severe environmental damage? Despite billions in budget spending on flood control, the problem remains unresolved.
Experts and local residents are urging the authorities to move from temporary fixes to systemic solutions: reinforcing dams, clearing riverbeds, building reservoirs, and improving monitoring systems. A telling example comes from the village of Karasu in the Kostanay Region, where a flood diversion channel was built, preventing disaster and preserve local agriculture. Only a comprehensive approach can protect people and the regional economy from future flood threats.
