Road accidents are on the rise in Kazakhstan, claiming hundreds of lives each year. This troubling trend is driven by a combination of outdated road infrastructure, lack of systemic oversight and poor driving culture. Traditional measures — awareness campaigns, fines, traffic cameras — are no longer enough.
According to the Committee on Legal Statistics and Special Records of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan, over 9,000 traffic accidents were recorded in the first four months of 2025 — a 51.5% increase compared to the same period last year.
The surge in casualties and injuries is alarming: over 13,000 people were injured. At the same time, official data show that the number of road deaths has remained roughly the same — 558 fatalities. The scale of road accidents is growing rapidly, and this is felt not only in major cities, but also across the regions.
