The VAB Method: Can Vacuum-Assisted Biopsy Be an Alternative to Surgery for Benign Breast Tumours?

For several years now, Kazakhstan has been using vacuum-assisted biopsy (VAB) devices to treat benign breast tumours.

The VAB method allows for rapid removal of the tumour without the need for general anaesthesia. Unlike traditional surgery, VAB leaves no scarring. However, it is currently available only in private clinics across seven cities and is not covered under the Mandatory Social Health Insurance (MSHI) system.

Can VAB truly serve as an alternative to surgical intervention for benign tumours? How many procedures have been performed to date? What do experts and international studies say, and what is the position of the Ministry of Health?
