Every year, about 10,000 people are released from prisons in Kazakhstan, but many soon end up back behind bars. Freedom becomes not a new beginning, but another challenge — one that not everyone can overcome.

The journalist spoke with people who had recently been released: they shared their experiences of disorientation, lack of permanent residence, employment, and any kind of support. Human rights defender Yevgeny Zhovtis also explained why the resocialization system in Kazakhstan fails to function properly.
