Floods in Kostanay and the Region – How to Stop Torrents of Water and Minimise the Damage

Last year, more than 12,000 homes in 12 regions of Kazakhstan were affected by flooding. Exactly a year ago, the situation was also critical in the Kostanay region — not only private houses but also bridges and roads were submerged. This spring, flooding has already hit the Akmola region: according to national media, an SUV was swept away by the water, and the driver drowned.

Is it possible to stop a natural disaster, or at least minimise the damage it causes? Throughout March, NG correspondents investigated this issue, speaking with affected residents and consulting experts to explore all possible solutions.
